A Morning of Wisdom at the Shawnee Hills Arts Center 🎨
On Monday, our Union County CEO students had the privilege of spending the morning with Ms. Lee Hackney at the Shawnee Hills Arts Council. We came expecting to learn about the arts, and we left with lessons that reach far beyond business.
Ms. Hackney opened by asking each student to share three words or phrases that are most valuable to them. It was a meaningful reminder that every person in the room is working toward their own goals and guided by their own values.
She also shared stories from her service in the Navy, where she led with care, built trust with the sailors she served alongside, and earned respect that carried her up through the ranks. Our students were deeply moved by her example of leadership rooted in integrity, conviction, and genuine care for people.
Ms. Hackney also spoke about how art strengthens a community and enriches the lives of those who take part in it. But what stayed with our students most was her mindset. Here are a few of the words they carried home:
✨ "Worrying is a waste of time."
✨ "Learn from your mistakes and enjoy the ride."
✨ As long as you learn from it, it isn't failure.
✨ You are your own biggest critic, so give yourself grace. It's your first time living.
One student reflected that her words were exactly what they needed to hear during this season of life. Another shared that they want to stop worrying about what could go wrong and start seeing setbacks as opportunities to grow. That kind of shift in thinking is what CEO is all about.
