On Monday, March 16, young professionals from the Union, Saline, Jackson, Johnson, and Jefferson County CEO programs, along with the Franklin County EDGE Program, gathered at the Gower Translational Research Center at Southern Illinois University for the Regional Student Entrepreneurship Workshop — a truly impactful experience focused on preparing for upcoming trade show season.

The day began with a warm welcome from Lynn Andersen Lindberg, followed by inspiring opening remarks from SIU Chancellor Dr. Austin A. Lane. From there, students were immersed in a thoughtfully designed agenda led by an outstanding lineup of speakers and facilitators, including Ken Stoner, Brian Croft, Aimee Wigfall, Curt Jones and Tom Harness, who brought energy, expertise, and real-world insight to every session.

Throughout the morning, students participated in engaging activities centered around “finding their voice,” developing strong elevator pitches, and confidently presenting their ideas. With guidance from entrepreneurship facilitators and the Saluki Entrepreneur Corps, students had the opportunity to collaborate, practice, and develop a pitch on a random topic, then refine and present their ideas in a supportive and encouraging environment designed to build confidence and strengthen their communication skills.

The afternoon sessions shifted focus to trade show preparation, where students gained valuable strategies on everything from booth presentation and marketing to understanding the “dos and don’ts” of successful trade show participation. Hearing directly from experienced professionals provided meaningful, practical takeaways that students can immediately apply to their own businesses.

The day also included a networking lunch, giving students the opportunity to connect with peers, mentors, and presenters — reinforcing the importance of relationships, community, and collaboration in the entrepreneurial journey.

We are incredibly grateful to Southern Illinois University Carbondale, all presenters, facilitators, and organizers who made this experience possible. Their investment of time, knowledge, and encouragement is making a lasting impact on these young professionals and their futures.

Experiences like this are a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship is not just about business — it’s about growth, confidence, connection, and stepping boldly into opportunity.

We cannot wait to see how these students apply what they’ve learned as they head into trade show season! 🌟
