We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to visit Deaconess Illinois Union County Hospital and spend the morning with CEO Harry Brockus! 🏥

Our team received an inside look at the many moving parts that keep a community hospital running—from the Emergency Room to radiology, surgery, and specialized services like MRI and mammography. It was eye-opening to learn just how much coordination, staffing, and advanced equipment is required to provide high-quality care right here in Union County. 💡

Students were especially impacted by hearing Harry’s personal journey into healthcare. One young professional, Jayci Needling, reflected on how a life-changing experience involving his brother ultimately shaped his path and inspired him to dedicate his career to helping others. Moments like this serve as powerful reminders that challenging experiences can often lead to meaningful purpose. ✨

Another student, Mariel McGrath, shared a meaningful takeaway about the connection between healthcare and community—highlighting how collaboration between organizations like Rural Health and the hospital reflects the strength and support of our local network. This reinforced how deeply connected and supportive our community truly is. 🤝

We also had the privilege of hearing from Marcus Thorpe, Director of Imaging and father of 2022 UCCEO alum Madddox Thorpe, who joined us in the radiology department to share additional insight into imaging services and career opportunities in healthcare. We are grateful for his time and willingness to invest in our students!

One especially impactful takeaway from our visit was learning that the hospital is able to offer advanced treatments and medications designed to support patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease—helping improve quality of life for individuals and families right here in our community. 🧠

We also had the opportunity to see the hospital’s newly completed helicopter landing pad, an important addition that enhances their ability to quickly transport patients and respond to critical situations. 🚁

From learning about the realities of staffing in a rural hospital to understanding the cost and importance of life-saving equipment and treatments, this visit gave our students a new appreciation for the “business” of healthcare—and the heart behind it. ❤️

We are especially thankful that Deaconess Illinois Union County Hospital is not only a vital healthcare provider, but also a committed investor and supporter of the Union County CEO program. Their continued belief in our young professionals and their willingness to open their doors, share their knowledge, and invest in the future of our community does not go unnoticed. 👏

Thank you to Harry, Marcus, and the entire team for your generosity, your time, and the incredible care you provide to Union County each and every day!
